{"id":15166,"date":"2025-11-13T07:53:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T05:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/indias-palm-oil-imports-hit-5-year-low-as-soy-oil-purchases-surge-to-record\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:27:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:27:28","slug":"indias-palm-oil-imports-hit-5-year-low-as-soy-oil-purchases-surge-to-record","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/indias-palm-oil-imports-hit-5-year-low-as-soy-oil-purchases-surge-to-record\/","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s palm oil imports hit 5-year low as soy oil purchases surge to record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Lower palm oil imports by India, the world&#8217;s biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could boost inventories in top producers Indonesia and Malaysia and pressure benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Palm oil imports in the 2024\/25 marketing year ended in October fell 15.9% from a year ago to 7.58 million metric tons, the lowest since 2019\/20, the Solvent Extractors&#8217; Association (SEA)\u00a0of India said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Soy oil imports in the year jumped 59% to a record 5.47 million tons, while sunflower oil purchases fell 16.3% to 2.9 million tons, the SEA said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">For most of the marketing year, palm oil traded at a premium to soy oil, prompting refiners to switch to soy oil, said B V Mehta, Executive Director of the SEA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">India&#8217;s total vegetable oil imports in the year rose marginally to 16.36 million tons from the previous year&#8217;s 16.23 million tons the SEA said.
