Angolan President Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o is in Washington DC for an official visit at the invitation of the United States (US) government, marking the latest step in the steady warming of relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The trip comes as Luanda and Washington increase cooperation in areas such as infrastructure development and renewable energy, sectors Angola sees as central to its efforts to modernise the economy and attract long-term investment.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Angolan economist Dr Lutumba Sim\u00e3o says the visit highlights a shift in Angola\u2019s external partnerships at a crucial moment for the country.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThis engagement with the US shows that Angola is broadening its options,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it translates into real investment in infrastructure and clean energy, it could support stronger economic growth. But it has to be negotiated carefully so that Angola gets the best out of these agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He added that while there is clear potential, the real test will be ensuring that any projects agreed to are properly executed.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThe challenge is always in the delivery,\u201dSim\u00e3o noted. \u201cLarge-scale projects need transparent processes and strong oversight. Without that, the benefits won\u2019t filter down to most Angolans.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Louren\u00e7o is expected to meet senior US officials and business leaders, with discussions likely to focus on energy, investment and broader economic reforms.<\/p>\n
