The chipmaker <\/span>in September<\/span> announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI <\/span>in<\/span> a deal that would have <\/span>given<\/span> the ChatGPT maker the <\/span>cash<\/span> and access <\/span>it <\/span>needed<\/span> to <\/span>buy<\/span> advanced chips <\/span>that are key to<\/span> maintaining its dominance in an increasingly competitive landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, <\/span>said<\/span> the companies are <\/span>rethinking<\/span> the future of their partnership<\/span>, and the<\/span> latest discussions include an equity investment of tens of billions of dollars as part of OpenAI’s current funding round.<\/span><\/p>\n

NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has privately emphasised to industry associates in recent months that the original $100 billion agreement was non-binding and not finalised, the report said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Huang has also privately criticised what he has described as a lack of discipline in OpenAI’s business approach and expressed concern about the competition it faces from <\/span>the likes of<\/span> Alphabet’s Google and Anthropic, the WSJ added.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We have been OpenAI’s preferred partner for the last 10 years. We look forward to continuing to work together,” an Nvidia Spokesperson said in an emailed statement to <\/span>Reuters<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. <\/span>Big Tech companies and investors such as SoftBank Group Corp are racing to forge partnerships with OpenAI, which is spending heavily on data <\/span>centres<\/span>, betting that <\/span>closer<\/span> ties with the startup would give them a competitive edge in the AI race.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon is in talks to invest <\/span>dozens of<\/span> billions in OpenAI and the figure could be as high as $50 billion, <\/span>Reuters<\/span><\/em> reported on Thursday. OpenAI is looking to raise <\/span>up<\/span> to $100 billion in funding, valuing it at about $830 billion, <\/span>Reuters<\/span><\/em> has previously reported.<\/span><\/p>\n
