{"id":23259,"date":"2026-02-03T14:35:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T12:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/drc-fighting-drove-spike-in-insurance-costs-squeezing-miners\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:34:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:34:05","slug":"drc-fighting-drove-spike-in-insurance-costs-squeezing-miners","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/drc-fighting-drove-spike-in-insurance-costs-squeezing-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018DRC fighting drove spike in insurance costs, squeezing miners\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political violence insurance premiums in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) jumped as much as tenfold last year due to unrest in the east, boosting insurers but lifting costs for copper-cobalt miners, insurance executives told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rwandan-backed AFC\/M23 rebels overran eastern DRC&#8217;s Goma town in January 2025, part of an advance that saw the group seize more territory than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The violence forced widespread business closures, left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DRC&#8217;s No.\u202f2 insurer, SFA, gets a quarter of its business from mining and insures about half of the country&#8217;s operators.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Valery Safarian, adviser to the board of SFA DRC, said political violence premiums &#8220;spiked five to ten times after the events&#8221; before easing back this year as calm returned and market capacity improved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The shock doubled SFA&#8217;s political violence portfolio from around $3 million to $6 million in a year, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SFA General Manager Xavier Denys said demand surged &#8220;almost overnight&#8221; as companies rushed to renew or secure fresh cover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DRC HOLDS VAST MINERAL RESERVES<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DRC supplies more than 70% of the world&#8217;s cobalt and holds some of the richest copper, lithium, coltan and gold reserves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Major operators include China&#8217;s CMOC, Glencore, Eurasian Resources and Chemaf.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Safarian said mines avoided direct hits from the offensive, with retail and industrial clients suffering most of the damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Industrial risks, property damage, pit collapse, machinery breakdown and tailings dam failures, remained the biggest exposures, Denys said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As rates surged, new reinsurers entered the market, adding capacity and pulling premiums back towards pre-crisis levels in January, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since DRC liberalised its insurance market in 2018, non-life premiums have risen fivefold, from $67 million to about $350 million in 2025, Denys said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SFA&#8217;s turnover rose from $73 million in 2024 to more than $81 million in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With local technical capacity deepening, SFA plans to expand into neighbouring markets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to turn DRC into a regional hub, exporting expertise beyond our borders,&#8221; Safarian said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":23260,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[44],"class_list":["post-23259","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-finance","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"Political violence insurance premiums in DRC jumped as much as tenfold last year","published_date":"2026-02-03 16:33:21","news_description":"Political violence insurance premiums in DRC jumped as much as tenfold last year","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/23259","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/23259\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":26281,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/23259\/revisions\/26281"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/23260"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23259"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=23259"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
