{"id":23271,"date":"2026-02-04T05:34:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T03:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-minister-stresses-difference-between-illegal-artisanal-mining\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:34:06","slug":"sa-minister-stresses-difference-between-illegal-artisanal-mining","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-minister-stresses-difference-between-illegal-artisanal-mining\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Minister stresses difference between illegal, artisanal mining"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">South Africa&#8217;s (SA) Minerals and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has emphasised that there is a clear distinction between illegal mining and artisanal mining.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">He says the difference has been misinterpreted by the Human Rights Commission in its national inquiry into the industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Appearing before the Commission in Johannesburg, Mantashe stressed that government has created policies and provided funding to support small-scale and artisanal miners in the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">He argued that the 2024 disaster at the Stilfontein mine in North West province was not due to regulatory failure on the government\u2019s part, but a risk the illegal miners took despite the danger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">More than 70 illegal miners died underground after law enforcement officers blocked the entrances to the mine to flush out illegal miners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cWe are here to the Human Right Commission, you are conducting an Inquiry on artisanal and small-scale mining but your emphasis is on illegal mining. Our starting point is that your framework is wrong, you are having an inquiry on a wrong issue to resolve a different issue, so therefore this inquiry if it is about illegal mining, focus on illegal mining for what it stands for, it\u2019s not for artisanal mining.
