The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), says doctors who issue deceitful or untruthful medical certificates will be dealt with harshly.<\/p>\n
This comes after Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga\u2019s warning to witnesses who submit what he called \u201cuseless\u201d medical certificates to avoid appearing before the Madlanga Commission.<\/p>\n
The commission probing political interference and infiltration in the criminal justice system received at least three medical certificates in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
One of them was from North West businessperson Brown Mogotsi, and another from a Crime Intelligence officer who submitted a sick note on which his medical condition was illegible.<\/p>\n
The HPCSA\u2019s head of Corporate Affairs, Priscilla Sekhonyana, says health professionals should observe their ethical obligations.<\/p>\n
She says, \u201cThe ethical rules of conduct for registered health practitioners govern the professional practice of health practitioners, including matters relating to the issuing of medical certificates and reports. A health practitioner who issues a medical certificate that does not comply with these requirements may be reported to the HPCSA for investigation into a potential contravention of the applicable professional and ethical standards.\u201d<\/p>\n
