{"id":28030,"date":"2026-03-08T09:20:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T07:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=28030"},"modified":"2026-03-08T09:28:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T07:28:45","slug":"russell-mercedes-dominate-australian-grand-prix","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/russell-mercedes-dominate-australian-grand-prix\/","title":{"rendered":"Russell, Mercedes dominate Australian Grand Prix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mercedes driver George Russell struck the first blow in the Formula One championship as he claimed an emphatic victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli and crushed an \u200bearly challenge from Ferrari on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Having dominated qualifying, pole-sitter Russell&#8217;s first win at Albert Park underlined Mercedes&#8217; \u200cpromising pre-season form while giving the team their first Melbourne victory since Valtteri Bottas claimed the 2019 race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great job everybody, it&#8217;s been a long time since we&#8217;ve been here,&#8221; Russell said over the team radio.<\/p>\n<p>The Briton finished nearly three seconds ahead of Italian Antonelli, with Leclerc \u200bmore than 15 seconds behind on a cloudy afternoon at the lakeside circuit.<\/p>\n<p>It was a tough day \u200bfor McLaren, with home hero Oscar Piastri&#8217;s race over before it begun with a crash during \u2060a reconnaissance lap some 40 minutes before the start.<\/p>\n<p>His teammate and defending champion Lando Norris finished fifth, one place \u200bbehind seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>Four-times champion Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull after starting 20th on \u200bthe grid following a crash in qualifying on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Russell engaged in a thrilling early duel with Leclerc as the racers swapped the lead seven times in the opening nine laps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a hell of a fight at the beginning,&#8221; said Russell. &#8220;I made a bad start, \u200band some really tight battles with Charles at the start just really glad to cross the finish line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There was ultimately \u200bdaylight between Mercedes and the rest, with Red Bull&#8217;s Isack Hadjar proving an unlikely determinant in the race&#8217;s outcome. His car stopped \u200con lap \u206012, with smoke billowing out of the rear, triggering a virtual safety car.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes called both their drivers in to pit, swapping out medium tyres for hard compounds and they rode them for the final 45 laps without issue.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari stayed out, much to the chagrin of Hamilton, who complained that at least one of them should have gone in.<\/p>\n<p>Only 20 of \u200bthe 22 cars started, with \u200bAudi&#8217;s Nico Hulkenberg scratched just \u2060before the race due to a reliability problem.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth on the grid, Leclerc had a terrific start, sneaking through a tight gap between Hadjar and Russell to snatch the lead at \u200bthe first corner.<\/p>\n<p>With Piastri out of the race, Hamilton had a clear run in \u200bfront of him \u2060and was soon up from seventh to third, leaving Russell in a Ferrari sandwich.<\/p>\n<p>Furious racing ensued as Leclerc and Russell fought wheel-to-wheel, and Russell nearly came unstuck when he locked up during one skirmish on lap nine.<\/p>\n<p>While the Mercedes cars pitted early, \u2060Leclerc finally \u200bcame in on lap 26, with Hamilton following a couple of laps \u200blater after surrendering the lead to Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Out in front with teammate Antonelli one behind, Russell was confident one stop would be enough and so it proved \u200bas they burned away from the Ferraris for a thumping win.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":28031,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"news-type":[78,20],"class_list":["post-28030","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-sport","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"The Briton finished nearly three seconds ahead of Italian Antonelli","published_date":"","news_description":"The Briton finished nearly three seconds ahead of Italian Antonelli","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/28030","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/28030\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":28032,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/28030\/revisions\/28032"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/28031"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=28030"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=28030"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
