As Channel Africa counts down to the launch of its inaugural Africa Matters summit, attention is turning to the continent\u2019s most pressing challenges and solutions. The platform aims to bring together key voices to address Africa\u2019s development issues, with a sharp focus this year on climate change and financing the continent\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of the event, Professor Mills Soko, of Wits Business School, Channel Africa\u2019s academic partner for the initiative, explained why the institution is deeply invested. \u201cWits Business School is committed to Africa\u2019s economic and social progress. Through research, innovation, and student training, we work to equip future leaders with the tools to tackle the continent\u2019s unique challenges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Soko highlighted that climate change, while driven minimally by Africa, has devastating consequences, including extreme weather, water stress, food insecurity, and heightened health risks. \u201cAfrica faces an urgent need for funding,\u201d he added, citing estimates that the continent requires $187\u2013$359 billion annually for climate adaptation, while only $28 billion was recently mobilized. He noted that much of this finance comes as loans, adding to Africa\u2019s already high debt burden, and stressed the need for greater private sector involvement.<\/p>\n

The summit, set for March 25 at Wits Business School, will bring together policymakers, business leaders, and development institutions. Discussions will cover regulatory environments, climate recovery strategies, and practical recommendations. Soko emphasised that the event will not be \u201cjust another talk shop\u201d but a platform aimed at producing actionable outcomes and fostering African-led solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people are at the heart of Africa\u2019s future,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir voices must be central to these conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

With panels, policy discussions, and partnerships with leading financial institutions, Africa Matters seeks to translate dialogue into tangible action, ensuring Africa\u2019s climate challenges are met with homegrown strategies backed by global support.<\/p>\n

Soko concluded, \u201cOur goal is clear: create a compact that allows us to implement solutions immediately and meaningfully, turning discussions into results for Africa\u2019s recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

This marks Channel Africa\u2019s first foray into a dedicated summit platform, underlining its commitment to shaping conversations around Africa\u2019s development challenges from an African perspective.<\/p>\n
