{"id":29191,"date":"2026-03-19T07:48:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T05:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=29191"},"modified":"2026-03-19T07:48:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T05:48:56","slug":"nigerias-e-hailing-drivers-protest-pricing-as-fuel-costs-rise","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/nigerias-e-hailing-drivers-protest-pricing-as-fuel-costs-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria\u2019s e-hailing drivers protest pricing as fuel costs rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Hundreds of Nigerian drivers who are signed up with ride-hailing services Uber, Bolt and inDrive protested on Wednesday in Lagos over low fares and high commissions while calling on the Lagos State Assembly to intervene and mandate higher pricing.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Nigeria is one of Africa\u2019s largest markets for app-based drivers, with roughly half operating in the commercial capital Lagos, a city of more than 20 million people, according to drivers\u2019 unions and transport regulators.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The drivers said the platforms set fares too low while charging commissions of up to 30%, leaving them with little income at a time when petrol prices have surged following the Iran conflict that pushed up global oil prices.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIn the past year, most drivers, at least 90%, have worked without any gain and they are living in horrible and terrible conditions, and they are very unhappy,\u201d said Ayodele Adedoy in Adetola, a union official who is signed up with inDrive.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAnd we say no to bad pricing on all the apps, be it inDrive, be it Bolt, be it Uber.
