The South African (SA) Rand weakened in early trade on Tuesday, pressured by a firm United States (US) Dollar before the release \u200bof Central bank data that will shed light on \u200cthe economic outlook.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Rand traded at 16.9075 against the Dollar, roughly down 0.5% from its previous close.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The currency had trimmed some recent losses \u200bon Monday after US President Donald Trump stepped back from plans \u200bto target Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure, saying \u2060that Washington and Tehran held constructive talks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His update lifted appetite \u200bfor risk-sensitive currencies like the Rand.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, sentiment turned cautious again after \u200bIran denied holding negotiations with Washington, reviving investor concerns over the economic impact of a potential energy shock stemming from the conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The \u200bSA Reserve Bank (SARB) will publish the country’s leading business cycle \u200bindicator for January, which collects data on vehicle sales, business confidence, money supply \u200cand \u2060other factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Thursday, investor attention will mainly be pinned on the central bank’s rate decision, when economists polled by Reuters expect the bank to keep its main lending rate steady at 6.75%.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The SARB’s \u200bGovernor told Reuters \u200bearlier this \u2060month that the central bank will revise its risk scenarios at its next policy meeting, as the conflict \u200bin the Middle East continues to push oil \u200bprices higher – \u2060a trend expected to fuel inflation in net energy-importing SA.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The US Dollar was last up 0.2% against a basket of currencies, with oil \u2060prices \u200brising due to supply fears.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SA’s \u200bbenchmark 2035 government bond was slightly weaker in early deals, with the yield rising 1 \u200bbasis point to 8.985%.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
