{"id":30312,"date":"2026-03-30T11:37:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T09:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=30312"},"modified":"2026-03-30T11:37:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T09:37:48","slug":"woodland-claims-first-golf-title-in-seven-years-at-houston-open","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/woodland-claims-first-golf-title-in-seven-years-at-houston-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Woodland claims first golf title in seven years at Houston open"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">American Gary Woodland has won his first professional golf title in seven years, taking the honours at the Houston Open in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">It was an emotional breakthrough for Woodland, who had an operation to remove a brain tumour in September 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Woodland won the United States Open in 2019 but battled in the years after that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">He also revealed recently that he struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder after his surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Woodland beat Denmark&#8217;s Nicolai Hojgaard by five shots to clinch the Professional Golfers&#8217; Association of America (PGA) Tour event in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">The American carded a final round of 3-under 67 and finished on 21-under for the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">And in a PGA Tour Champions event, 52-year-old Stewart Cink captured his third title in five starts with a win at the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">He now has six wins since joining the senior ranks.
