{"id":30457,"date":"2026-03-31T16:18:43","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T14:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=30457"},"modified":"2026-03-31T16:18:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T14:18:43","slug":"study-reveals-deeply-troubling-gbv-trends-among-youth","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/study-reveals-deeply-troubling-gbv-trends-among-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals deeply troubling GBV trends among youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">According to the South Africa\u2019s Human Sciences Research Council\u2019s (HSRC) National Gender-Based Violence (GBV) study published in 2024, 80% men aged between 18 \u2013 24 years accept controlling behaviour in relationships, raising concern about how early signs of abuse often go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">GBV activist and \u2018I survived and never got justice\u2019 founder, Norma Mbhele believes that people often see control as a form of love, however she says it is normally the beginning of something harmful, saying that many people only come to realise that it is abuse only when it gets physical.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cAt first people think, because he loves me, he wants to protect me,\u201d says Mbhele.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Mbhele says one of the biggest issues is that most fail to identify these behaviours as abuse in the early stages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cNow when you now realise that a person is actually controlling your life, and it becomes physical, it\u2019s only you see that it\u2019s actually not love but a person controlling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">She adds that it doesn\u2019t just stop at physical harm but that a person controlling another can take over their finances, who they build friendships with, who they talk to as well as their whereabouts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Based on her experience as an activist working on the ground with survivors, she says the implications of controlling behaviour can continue even after a relationship ends.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u201cEven after separation, the control doesn\u2019t always stop.
