{"id":31203,"date":"2026-04-09T13:13:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T11:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=31203"},"modified":"2026-04-09T13:13:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T11:13:31","slug":"zimbabwe-introduces-new-zig-banknotes-to-boost-local-currency","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/zimbabwe-introduces-new-zig-banknotes-to-boost-local-currency\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe introduces new ZiG banknotes to boost local currency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has started rolling out newly designed ZiG banknotes across the country, in a renewed effort to strengthen the local currency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new notes, branded the \u201cBig Five\u201d series, come with improved durability, stronger security features and wildlife imagery aimed at reflecting national identity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rollout comes at a time when the United States (US) Dollar still dominates most everyday transactions, especially in informal markets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Independent Policy Researcher Kevin Tutani says the move is intended to increase the presence of the ZiG in the economy. \u201cOnly about 10 to 20% of transactions are currently done in local currency, while the majority are in US Dollars. Introducing higher denominations is meant to boost supply and encourage wider use,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tutani noted that inflation remains relatively low, giving authorities room to carefully increase money supply.
