UN Assistant Secretary\u2011General for Political Affairs Khaled Khiari made the remarks during the Security Council\u2019s annual debate on cooperation between the two organisations on peace and security. He said the current international climate demands sustained engagement and trust\u2011building grounded in the principles of the UN Charter.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cIn an increasingly complex and uncertain international environment, sustained engagement, dialogue and trust\u2011building are essential,\u201d Khiari told the Council. He added that respect for international law and the UN Charter \u201cremains central to addressing shared challenges\u201d, noting that the EU plays an important role in advancing these principles.<\/p>\n
Khiari said the EU remains a key partner across the full spectrum of the UN\u2019s work, from conflict prevention and crisis response to human rights, sustainable development and humanitarian action. He expressed particular appreciation for the contributions of EU member states to UN peacekeeping, including through troop and police deployments in Lebanon and other challenging environments.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when advancing political solutions remains difficult in many contexts, the support of the EU to the UN\u2019s good offices, mediation and political engagement is especially important,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
