{"id":31793,"date":"2026-04-14T09:59:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T07:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=31793"},"modified":"2026-04-14T09:59:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T07:59:21","slug":"judicial-service-commission-interviews-enter-day-two-to-fill-key-sa-court-vacancies","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/judicial-service-commission-interviews-enter-day-two-to-fill-key-sa-court-vacancies\/","title":{"rendered":"Judicial Service Commission interviews enter day two to fill key SA court vacancies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Today marks the second day of interviews by the Judicial Service Commission aimed at filling critical vacancies in several of South Africa&#8217;s (SA) superior courts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The positions include three vacancies in the Supreme Court of Appeal, three posts in the Eastern Cape Province, Division of the High Court, five vacancies in the Western Cape Province, High Court, and the highly significant post of Judge President of the Gauteng Province, Division of the High Court.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The interviews are taking place against growing concern about judicial capacity and court backlogs.<\/div>\n<div>Judges Matter researcher Mbekezeli Benjamin says some of these positions have remained vacant for more than a year, placing additional strain on the justice system.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He added that the judiciary is under increasing pressure due to a shortage of judges, a challenge highlighted in the Office of the Chief Justice&#8217;s latest Reserved Judgment Report, which covers the start of Term Three of 2025.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;I think the process was very strong and competitive this time. The judicial service commission (Judicial Service Commission) was spoiled for choice, which is quite unusual. The real decision came down to which of the three candidates to move forward, and it appears the Judicial Service Commission\u00a0put careful thought into that choice.
