{"id":32033,"date":"2026-04-15T19:12:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T17:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=32033"},"modified":"2026-04-15T19:12:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T17:12:35","slug":"sa-minister-announces-early-success-in-fmd-vaccination-campaign","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-minister-announces-early-success-in-fmd-vaccination-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Minister announces early success in FMD vaccination campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s (SA) Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has announced encouraging early results in South Africa\u2019s fight against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), with the national vaccination campaign showing clear signs of success.<\/p>\n<p>Steenhuisen says more than two million animals have been vaccinated between February and March 26, 2026, with no new infections recorded in already vaccinated herds.<\/p>\n<p>Although cases have been reported in all nine provinces, the Department says that the recent increase reflects improved detection rather than a worsening outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent increase in reported numbers is due to improved government capacity. We have strengthened surveillance and implemented a centralised reporting system, allowing for earlier detection and faster data capture. Furthermore, heightened awareness has helped identify \u201csub-clinical\u201d cases, where animals carry the virus without showing obvious symptoms, which previously might have gone unnoticed,\u201d Steenhuisen explains.<\/p>\n<p>The Department says it has secured over four million vaccine doses, with additional shipments expected before the end of April.
