{"id":32160,"date":"2026-04-16T16:25:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=32160"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:25:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:25:47","slug":"citi-sees-three-sovereign-debt-defaults-in-africa-in-coming-two-years","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/citi-sees-three-sovereign-debt-defaults-in-africa-in-coming-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Citi sees three sovereign debt defaults in Africa in coming two years \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senegal, Mozambique and Malawi could default on their debts in the next two years, Citi&#8217;s Chief Africa Economist David Cowan said this Thursday, as governments reel from the impact of \u200cthe Iran oil price shock on their finances and economies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, the 54-nation continent has experienced four sovereign defaults that were restructuring debt under the G20 initiative, Ghana, Zambia, Ethiopia and Chad, with countries buckling under a mix of heavy debt burdens and economic mismanagement exacerbated \u2060by external shocks from the COVID-19 pandemic to Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Africa is still not entirely out of the woods yet in terms of the debt defaults,&#8221; David Cowan told a news briefing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Senegal, which has been seeking to steer its way out of a hidden debt crisis uncovered in late 2024, was still in &#8220;a pretty big mess,&#8221; he said, meaning they could head into a default in 2027 after scraping through this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Malawi and \u200cMozambique \u2060could default this year, Cowan said, citing a steep weakening of their respective currencies, which could push their debt stocks and payments due on hard-currency lending into unsustainable territory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Defaults by the two Southern African nations could however be resolved quickly since \u2060Malawi does not have international bonds, while Mozambique has only one outstanding hard-currency bond.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Malawi&#8217;s debt is largely owed to the World Bank, multilateral and bilateral donors,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, \u2060Africa is faring better in terms of international borrowing costs in the Iran war-linked crisis compared with previous ones, Cowan said, citing the Democratic \u2060Republic of the Congo&#8217;s debut Eurobond issuance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kenya could let its currency weaken to absorb some of the depreciation pressure stemming from elevated prices of crude oil, Cowan said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Reuters&#8211;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":32161,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"news-type":[44],"class_list":["post-32160","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-finance","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"Senegal, Mozambique and Malawi could default on their debts in the next two years","published_date":"2026-04-16 16:09:28","news_description":"Senegal, Mozambique and Malawi could default on their debts in the next two years","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/32160","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/32160\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":32162,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/32160\/revisions\/32162"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/32161"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=32160"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=32160"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
