Officials say weapons, explosives and funding networks linked to the plot were uncovered, raising fresh concerns about election security in a volatile region.<\/p>\n
The announcement comes as the National Election Board of Ethiopia confirmed that more than 46 million voters have registered to take part in the polls, out of a population of about 130 million. Thousands of polling stations have been prepared nationwide, and voter registration was extended in an effort to boost participation.<\/p>\n

Analysts say the alleged plot underscores the complex security environment in which Ethiopia is heading into the vote. Speaking to Channel Africa, Dr Norman Mulaudzi, Senior Research Fellow at the Pan\u2011African Thought Conversation, said Ethiopia\u2019s internal politics cannot be separated from wider regional dynamics. \u201cEthiopia sits in a highly fragile neighbourhood, bordered by countries affected by conflict such as Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan and Eritrea,\u201d Mulaudzi said. \u201cRegional instability and cross\u2011border armed groups inevitably influence Ethiopia\u2019s internal security calculations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that Ethiopia also faces deep\u2011seated internal challenges, including ethnic tensions and unresolved political grievances, which complicate efforts to organise credible elections. While the high number of registered voters suggests strong public interest, Mulaudzi cautioned that dissatisfaction with governance and insecurity could still depress turnout in conflict\u2011affected areas.<\/p>\n

Youth participation is expected to be a decisive factor, with young people making up a large share of the population. However, Mulaudzi said ongoing unemployment, limited opportunities and perceptions of political exclusion could affect how young voters engage with the process.<\/p>\n

Logistics also remain a concern. With nearly 47 000 polling stations planned, election management will depend heavily on effective security coordination. \u201cThe greatest risks tend to arise in areas affected by conflict, where it becomes difficult to deploy materials and ensure voter safety,\u201d Mulaudzi said.<\/p>\n
Ethiopian authorities have framed the disrupted plot as evidence that security agencies are acting decisively to protect the electoral process. Whether that will translate into a credible, inclusive and peaceful election remains a key question as voting day approaches.<\/p>\n
