{"id":32624,"date":"2026-04-21T15:25:48","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=32624"},"modified":"2026-04-21T15:25:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:25:48","slug":"saa-recovery-clouded-by-risks","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/saa-recovery-clouded-by-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"SAA recovery clouded by risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\">The Portfolio Committee on Transport has been told that the South African Airways (SAA) could be closed in a year if the current situation continues.<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">While the national carrier is turning the corner and recording profits, it however remains an ongoing concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the profits are driven by the sale of the London Heathrow route by SAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">Creecy and the Auditor General&#8217;s office briefed the Transport Portfolio Committee on the SAA 2024 and 2025 financial report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">SAA is turning the corner financially, but it is still not out of trouble due to liquidity challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">There are concerns that operating costs outweigh the revenue costs resulting in net operating losses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\">Auditor General office Thato Kunene: &#8220;SAA is having cash trapped in foreign land and they are struggling to repatriate those particular funds namely the countries that are impact is Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi.
