{"id":33355,"date":"2026-04-30T07:53:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T05:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=33355"},"modified":"2026-04-30T07:53:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T05:53:17","slug":"nigerias-president-nominates-new-oil-regulator-in-second-leadership-change-in-four-months","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/nigerias-president-nominates-new-oil-regulator-in-second-leadership-change-in-four-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria&#8217;s\u00a0President nominates new oil regulator in second leadership change in four months"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as Chief Executive of \u200bthe Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), \u200cthe second leadership change at the petroleum regulator in four months, the presidency said on Tuesday.<\/div>\n<div>\nUmar replaces Saidu Mohammed who \u200bwas appointment in December after their predecessors abruptly \u200bquit, amid a high stakes clash between one agency \u2060and Africa&#8217;s richest man, Aliko Dangote.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Wednesday&#8217;s nomination comes \u200bas Nigeria grapples with rising domestic energy prices, partly \u200bdriven by higher global oil prices following the escalation of conflict involving Iran, which has heightened concerns about supply disruptions and \u200bincreased volatility in international energy markets.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Presidency said \u200bthe decision was made in the public interest and aimed at \u200cstrengthening \u2060regulatory effectiveness in the midstream and downstream petroleum sector.<\/div>\n<div>Pending Senate confirmation, the most senior official at the NMDPRA will oversee the agency in an acting capacity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Umar \u200bhas more \u200bthan 25 \u2060years of experience across the energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
