The United Nations (UN) is struggling to make an impact at a time of rising global conflict, according to International Crisis Group\u2019s Head of UN Affairs, Daniel Forti, a reality now shaping the race for its next leader.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Four candidates, Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Grossi, Rebeca Grynspan and Macky Sall, have faced intense questioning from diplomats on conflict, poverty and reform, in what is being described as one of the toughest global job interviews.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Forti says the UN remains crucial as a global platform for peace and negotiation, but is increasingly being sidelined as countries turn to smaller, more agile alliances. Peacekeeping missions are shrinking, and the organisation is facing growing competition in conflict mediation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For Africa, the implications are significant.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The UN has long supported the continent, from the decolonisation era to modern peacekeeping and collaboration with the African Union. But its ability to continue playing that role effectively is now under scrutiny.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The leadership race itself reflects deeper structural tensions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
While all 193 member states take part in the process, real decision-making power lies with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and France, each holding veto power over the final outcome.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
That dynamic is already narrowing the field, with only four candidates formally in the race, fewer than in previous selection cycles, raising questions about whether any contender can secure broad consensus.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Two key issues are also shaping the debate: a push to appoint the UN\u2019s first woman Secretary-General, and pressure to follow regional rotation, with Latin America widely seen as next in line, even as Africa looks ahead to its turn.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Despite efforts to make the process more transparent through public hearings, analysts say the final decision will still be determined behind closed doors.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Forti argues that whoever is chosen will inherit more than just a leadership role, they will face the challenge of redefining the UN\u2019s place in a rapidly shifting global order, where its relevance is no longer guaranteed.<\/p>\n
