{"id":33431,"date":"2026-04-30T19:07:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T17:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=33431"},"modified":"2026-04-30T19:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T17:07:11","slug":"nigeria-urged-to-investigate-deaths-in-army-run-camp-military-rejects-report","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/nigeria-urged-to-investigate-deaths-in-army-run-camp-military-rejects-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria urged to investigate deaths in army-run camp, military rejects report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amnesty International called on Nigeria to investigate reports that at least 150 people, \u200cmost of them children, had died in an army-run camp in north-central Kwara state, though the military said the reports were baseless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The victims were reported to be among about 1 500 members of \u2060the Fulani community who were moved to the camp in Yikpata after facing escalating attacks by armed groups, Amnesty said this Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead of finding safety, they face overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, restrictions on their movements, acute malnutrition and disease,&#8221; Amnesty said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The military dismissed the report of deaths. &#8220;There is \u200cno \u2060verifiable evidence to support such an allegation,&#8221; Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I doubt its veracity.
