South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s Military Chief and a Finance Minister \u200bwho had been in post for less than \u200ctwo weeks, state media reported late on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The dismissals were the latest of frequent changes in the top ranks of \u200bKiir’s government in recent years that analysts say \u200bsignal an effort to consolidate power amid succession \u2060uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The fired Army Chief, General Paul Nang, had occupied \u200bthe position since October and his tenure had come \u200bunder increasing scrutiny amid worsening insecurity in the country while the Finance Minister, Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, had served in the position \u200bsince April 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kiir reappointed General Santino Deng Wol \u200bas the new Army Chief, state media South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation \u200csaid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u2060Wol, from South Sudan’s Bahr El Gazal region where Kiir hails from, is a close ally of the President and had served in the same post between \u200b2020 and 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Kuol \u200bDaniel Ayulo, \u2060a career technocrat who had previously served at the finance ministry and ministry \u200bof trade as an undersecretary, has been \u200bappointed as \u2060the new finance minister, according to the state media.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

South Sudan has struggled to fully implement key reforms outlined \u2060in \u200bthe 2018 peace agreement that ended \u200ba five-year civil war, including the unification of the armed forces and \u200bholding of elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
