United States (US) President Donald Trump predicted a swift end to the \u200bwar with Iran as Tehran considered a US peace proposal that sources said would formally end the conflict while leaving unresolved key US demands that Iran suspend \u200cits nuclear programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.<\/div>\n

An Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson cited by Iran\u2019s ISNA<\/i>\u00a0news agency said Tehran would convey its response, while Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei, a Spokesperson for parliament\u2019s powerful foreign policy and national security committee, described the proposal as \u201cmore of US wish-list than a reality.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cThey want to make a deal. We\u2019ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours, and it\u2019s very possible that we\u2019ll make \u200ba deal,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, saying later \u201cit\u2019ll be over quickly.\u201d<\/div>\n

Trump has repeatedly played up the prospect of an agreement to end the war \u200bthat started on February 28, so far without success<\/div>\n

The two sides remain at odds over a variety of difficult issues, such as Iran\u2019s nuclear \u2060ambitions and its control of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war handled one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and gas supply.<\/div>\n

A Pakistani source and another source briefed on the mediation \u200bsaid an agreement was close on a one-page memorandum that would formally end the conflict.<\/div>\n

That would kick off discussions to unblock shipping through the strait, lift US sanctions on Iran and set \u200bcurbs on Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, the sources said.<\/div>\n

A separate Senior Pakistani official involved in the talks told\u00a0Reuters <\/i>on Thursday that negotiators were hopeful of reaching a deal but noted gaps between the sides remained.<\/div>\n

\u201cOur priority is that they announce a permanent end to war and the rest of the issues could be thrashed out once they get back to direct talks,\u201d said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/div>\n

Iran\u2019s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer \u200bQalibaf appeared to mock reports that indicated the two sides were close, writing on social media in English that \u201cOperation Trust Me Bro failed.\u201d<\/div>\n

Qalibaf said such reports amounted to US spin following \u200bits failure to open the Strait of Hormuz.<\/div>\n
