Government Spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly said the decision was approved after repeated disputes over the commission\u2019s independence plus election management, with the stated aim of paving the way for a new electoral management system capable of restoring public confidence and supporting peaceful polls.<\/p>\n
The decision comes after months of pressure from civil society organisations and opposition figures who accused the CEI of failing to guarantee a level playing field during the 2025 vote. Concerns previously centred on restricted competition after major opposition candidates were barred from participating, raising questions about inclusivity plus credibility.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Channel Africa on Thursday, West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network Advocacy Officer Austin Aigbe said dissolution could be a meaningful step if the replacement process is transparent, consultative plus insulated from political interference. Aigbe said the way a new body is constituted will determine whether reform is viewed as genuine institutional repair or as political engineering ahead of future elections.<\/p>\n
Aigbe warned that timing matters. Aigbe said hurried creation of a new body close to the next election cycle could weaken institutional learning, reduce accountability plus create conditions for renewed disputes. Aigbe also pointed to wider regional patterns where trust in electoral bodies is frequently undermined by appointment systems perceived as favouring incumbents.<\/p>\n
Aigbe said credibility would require broad-based consultation that includes opposition parties, civil society, plus technical experts, with clear criteria for appointments, voter registration integrity and operational transparency. Aigbe said confidence-building should include stronger safeguards for independence plus predictable procedures for dispute resolution.<\/p>\n
