{"id":33998,"date":"2026-05-08T07:40:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T05:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=33998"},"modified":"2026-05-08T07:40:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T05:40:02","slug":"south-africans-urged-to-cut-salt-intake-during-world-salt-awareness-week","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/south-africans-urged-to-cut-salt-intake-during-world-salt-awareness-week\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans urged to cut salt intake during World Salt Awareness week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (SA) is calling on citizens to reduce their salt intake as part of World Salt Awareness Week.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation says the country has one of the highest salt consumption rates globally.<\/p>\n<p>New data released shows that more than one in three South Africans are living with elevated blood pressure, despite many believing their salt intake is normal.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Executive Officer Prof. Pamela Naidoo says they are now appealing for greater awareness, stronger regulations and improved access to healthier alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tagline is #SaltedOut and Make the Salt Shift. And that&#8217;s basically to really try and raise this awareness that your acceptable level of salt intake per day is around 5 grams a day. And unfortunately, globally and in SA, we are exceeding adult , you know, adult consumption of 5 grams a day.
