Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel after United States-Israeli bombing of Iran started on February 28, adding to the regional escalation.

United Nations (UN) Women Regional Director for Arab States Moez Doraid said women account for 25% of more than 380 people killed since the April 17 ceasefire came into effect, highlighting danger for families attempting to return home under assumed safety.

Doraid said continued Israeli airstrikes, evacuation orders, bans on return to certain areas, plus movement restrictions, mean most displaced people still cannot return. Doraid said more than 500 000 women and girls remain displaced.

Speaking from Beirut, Doraid urged international support to “bring back the hope”, warning that the current conflict has eroded hope as homes plus land in southern Lebanon have been destroyed. Doraid cited worsening food insecurity, including testimony of a woman forced to forage for wild herbs to feed a family.

Food security assessments indicate an additional 144 000 women and girls could face crisis-level hunger or worse in the coming months, bringing the total to around 639 000.

Basic services remain heavily disrupted, with access to food, water, healthcare, plus education under strain. Displacement has reached 1.2 million, with communities uprooted by evacuation orders covering more of the country than previously recorded.

With ceasefire conditions holding without a durable peace, thousands are returning under hazardous conditions, including extensive housing damage plus the risk of unexploded ordnance.

World Food Programme Assistant Executive Director for Programme Operations Matthew Hollingworth said World Food Programme operations negotiated movement of 19 convoys to south Lebanon supporting 84 500 people, but convoy approvals remain limited. Hollingworth said fewer than 50% of convoy requests to Israel receive approval, restricting delivery into hard-to-reach areas.

UN Women said direct support has reached more than 15 000 women and girls, with a wider reach extending to more than 70 000 people across communities. UN Women is also supporting more than 500 women leaders to connect communities to assistance, identify urgent needs, reduce tensions, plus ensure women’s voices are included in response plus recovery planning.

–UN/ChannelAfrica–

[26
post-34122","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry
A fragile ceasefire in Lebanon has failed to stop “ongoing killing and displacement”, with aid teams reporting that villages in the south have been left unrecognisable after Israeli strikes.

A fragile ceasefire in Lebanon has failed to stop “ongoing killing and displacement”, with aid teams reporting that villages in the south have been left unrecognisable after Israeli strikes.
["GET
