{"id":34491,"date":"2026-05-14T14:15:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=34491"},"modified":"2026-05-14T14:15:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:15:24","slug":"part-of-somalia-at-risk-of-famine-for-first-time-since-2022","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/part-of-somalia-at-risk-of-famine-for-first-time-since-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Part of Somalia at risk of famine for first time since 2022\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A district in southern Somalia is \u200cat risk of famine, a United Nations (UN) sponsored report said this Thursday, the first time that part of the country has reached such a critical level of hunger since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>One of the world&#8217;s most food-insecure nations due \u200bto frequent drought, conflict and poverty, Somalia last experienced famine in 2011, when around \u200b250 000 people died, and came close in 2017 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This time, global \u2060cuts to foreign aid and the impacts of the United States (US) Israeli war on Iran are complicating efforts to \u200brespond to food shortages caused by multiple failed rain seasons and ongoing insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>More than one \u200bin three young children in the Burhakaba District of southern Somalia&#8217;s Bay Region, which is estimated to have a population of around 200 000, suffer from acute malnutrition, according to the report by Integrated Food Security \u200bPhase Classification (IPC).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The IPC analysis found Burhakaba District to be at risk of Famine under a \u200bplausible worst-case scenario of failing Gu (season) rains, soaring food prices and below expected delivery of humanitarian food security assistance,&#8221; \u200cthe \u2060report said.<\/p>\n<p>Famine occurs when at least 20% of households in an area face an extreme lack of food, at least 30% of children suffer from acute malnutrition, and two out of every 10 000 people are dying each day because of hunger.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Somalis facing crisis \u200blevels of food insecurity \u200bor worse was about \u20606 million.
