{"id":34547,"date":"2026-05-15T09:26:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=34547"},"modified":"2026-05-15T09:26:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:26:23","slug":"ebola-outbreak-confirmed-in-drc","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ebola-outbreak-confirmed-in-drc\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebola outbreak confirmed in DRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Africa&#8217;s top public health \u200bagency said on Friday that there \u200cwas a confirmed Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s (DRC) Ituri province.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Africa Centres for Disease Control (CDC)\u00a0 \u200band Prevention said in a statement that \u200bit was convening an urgent meeting with \u2060DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners \u200bto reinforce cross-border surveillance, preparedness and response efforts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It \u200bsaid about 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths had been reported, mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health \u200bzones, while four deaths had been reported \u200bamong laboratory-confirmed cases.<\/div>\n<div>The agency said initial findings suggested the \u200cpresence \u2060of a non-Zaire strain of the virus, with sequencing ongoing to further characterise it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Africa CDC is concerned about the risk of further spread \u200bdue to \u200bthe urban \u2060context of Bunia and Rwampara, intense population movement, mining-related mobility in \u200bMongwalu,&#8221; it added.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ebola virus disease is a \u200bsevere \u2060and often fatal illness.
