{"id":34599,"date":"2026-05-15T16:27:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=34599"},"modified":"2026-05-15T16:27:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:27:44","slug":"sa-becomes-worlds-top-citrus-exporter-as-industry-eyes-job-growth","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-becomes-worlds-top-citrus-exporter-as-industry-eyes-job-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"SA becomes world\u2019s top citrus exporter as industry eyes job growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A citrus farmer in South Africa\u2019s (SA) Eastern Cape province says growing international demand for SA citrus is expected to create much-needed jobs, particularly in one of the country\u2019s most economically challenged provinces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hennie Ehlers made the remarks after SA officially became the world\u2019s leading citrus exporter, narrowly overtaking Spain in export volumes during 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Industry figures show SA exported close to three million tons of citrus to global markets, underlining the country\u2019s growing role in international agricultural trade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ehlers said the industry already supports thousands of jobs in the Eastern Cape through farming and packing operations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe plant about 22 000 hectares and export more than 40 million cartons.
