Speakers at a recent discussion on climate finance and development in Africa say stronger accountability and tougher enforcement measures are urgently needed to ensure real progress on the continent\u2019s transition goals.<\/p>\n

The discussions formed part of Channel Africa\u2019s Africa Matters Summit, where policymakers, financial experts, activists and development stakeholders debated solutions to the continent\u2019s economic, environmental and governance challenges.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Several speakers argued that many climate and development commitments remain too voluntary, with little consequence for governments, institutions or companies that fail to deliver.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
One speaker said Africa needs legally binding targets, transparent reporting systems and independent oversight structures to ensure commitments are translated into real action.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to stop making solutions voluntary and start making them enforceable,\u201d the speaker said, adding that accountability must become more credible if meaningful change is to happen.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The summit also examined the role of development banks and the global financial system, with some participants arguing that existing financing structures continue to deepen inequality while limiting Africa\u2019s development potential.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
One contributor criticised development finance institutions for being too influenced by the current global economic order, saying Africa requires \u201cmore radical leadership\u201d to tackle inequality and drive inclusive growth.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Another speaker urged policymakers and financial institutions to focus on using existing resources more effectively rather than constantly debating whether funding levels are sufficient.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not only about whether the money is enough. The real question is whether we are optimising what we already have,\u201d the speaker said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Commercial banks, governments and extractive industries also faced criticism during the discussions, particularly over the environmental impact of large-scale mining and industrial projects on vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Participants warned that some projects presented as development initiatives are damaging ecosystems and worsening the effects of climate shocks on communities that rely heavily on natural resources for survival.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Speakers further stressed that governments must strengthen oversight and hold corporations accountable to ensure development does not come at the expense of communities and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
