{"id":34795,"date":"2026-05-18T20:54:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T18:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=34795"},"modified":"2026-05-18T22:34:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T20:34:18","slug":"sa-must-be-ready-for-swift-ebola-outbreak-response","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-must-be-ready-for-swift-ebola-outbreak-response\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;SA must be ready for swift Ebola outbreak response&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">South African (SA) clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist, Prof. Salim Abdool Karim, has warned that the country should be vigilant and be ready to respond to the Ebola outbreak which has affected parts of the continent.<\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div>At least 100 Ebola deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with more than 390 cases suspected.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the outbreak an international emergency.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div>Karim says Ebola is a public threat in the continent.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt should be noted that this is a big problem in that we are dealing with a situation where probably the first cases we just over four or six weeks ago. And we didn\u2019t even know about any of this until last week and the big challenge has been that because it\u2019s a new strain of Ebola Bundibugyo strain and it is hard to diagnose. All countries need to be vigilant, and SA is no different from all the other countries.
