{"id":34868,"date":"2026-05-19T13:32:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T11:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=34868"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:32:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T11:32:25","slug":"icc-prosecutors-state-that-libyan-suspect-was-notorious-torturer","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/icc-prosecutors-state-that-libyan-suspect-was-notorious-torturer\/","title":{"rendered":"ICC prosecutors state that Libyan suspect was notorious torturer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A 47-year-old suspect accused of overseeing one of the most notorious prisons in Libya was known as a ruthless torturer \u200bnicknamed &#8220;the angel of death&#8221; by detainees, prosecutors told judges at \u200cthe International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Prosecutors allege Al Hishri oversaw the women&#8217;s wing in Mitiga, a detention centre run by the Special Deterrence Force &#8211; known as Rada in Libya. \u200b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thousands of victims were unlawfully arrested and kept without legal \u200bbasis, held in inhumane conditions and systematically abused and tortured, \u2060according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;Khaled (Mohamed Ali) Al Hishri was widely known as a notorious \u200btorturer at the helm of Mitiga prison,&#8221; deputy prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan \u200bsaid at the start of three days of hearings set to determine the exact charges to be brought.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Prosecutors said Al Hishri personally abused and tortured inmates and raped \u200bthem as part of a pattern of sexualised torture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">They asked \u200bjudges to confirm 17 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes including murder, \u200crape, persecution \u2060and enslavement dating from February 2015 until early 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Al Hishri has not yet entered a formal plea to the suggested charges, but lawyers acting for him have asked judges to reject the charges and they challenge \u200bthe court&#8217;s jurisdiction \u200bin this case, \u2060court documents show.
