Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, will set up an embassy in Jerusalem soon, its ambassador said this Tuesday, \u200bafter Israel became the first country to formally recognise the self-declared \u200crepublic.<\/p>\n
In turn, Israel is expected to set up an embassy in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa, Ambassador Mohamed Hagi said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
Israel recognised Somaliland as \u200ban independent and sovereign state in December, a move Somalia \u200brejected and termed a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty.<\/p>\n
Somaliland has \u2060enjoyed effective autonomy\u00a0 and relative peace and stability -since 1991, when \u200bSomalia descended into civil war, but the breakaway region had until December \u200bfailed to receive recognition from any other country.<\/p>\n
Over the years, Somalia has rallied international actors against any country recognising Somaliland.
\nThe former British protectorate hopes that recognition \u200bby Israel will encourage other nations to follow suit, increasing its \u200bdiplomatic heft and access to international markets.’<\/p>\n
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Tuesday \u200cthat \u2060the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem would be another significant step in strengthening relations with Somaliland.<\/p>\n
Once opened, the Somaliland embassy would be the eighth embassy in Jerusalem, he said.<\/p>\n
Most countries maintain their embassies \u200bin Israel in\u00a0\u200bTel Aviv, although \u2060the United States moved its embassy to Jerusalem during President Donald Trump’s first administration. Fiji, Papua New \u200bGuinea and a small number of other countries have \u200balso established \u2060embassies there.<\/p>\n
Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its capital, a position not widely recognised internationally. The United Nations and most countries regard \u2060East Jerusalem \u200bas territory occupied by Israel.<\/p>\n
Palestinians seek \u200bEast Jerusalem as the capital of a future state encompassing the West Bank and Gaza.<\/p>\n
