Nigerian forces, supported by the United States Africa Command, carried out air and ground strikes that reportedly killed at least 175 fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province. The operations also destroyed checkpoints, weapons storage sites and logistical networks used by the group.<\/p>\n

Diyeli Aigbe, Lecturer in Criminology and Security Studies at Caleb University in Lagos, described the development as a positive step in efforts to address a long-running insurgency in the region.<\/p>\n

Aigbe said the operations demonstrate the importance of international cooperation in tackling security threats. Aigbe said collaboration between Nigerian authorities and external partners is necessary, as security challenges cannot be addressed in isolation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Aigbe said the presence of militant groups has had a significant impact across Nigeria, including kidnappings of schoolchildren and attacks on communities. Aigbe noted that recent incidents suggest pressure on armed groups in the northeast may be shifting activity towards other regions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Despite the reported success of the strikes, Aigbe cautioned that reliance on military action alone will not deliver lasting results. Aigbe said armed groups often regroup and recruit new members, particularly in environments marked by unemployment and weak governance.<\/p>\n

Aigbe called for a combined approach that includes dialogue, community engagement and non-military strategies to complement ongoing security operations. Aigbe said such measures are essential to sustain gains made through military action.<\/p>\n

Aigbe also raised concerns about possible political influence in security responses, noting that public perception of government action has shifted as operations intensify. Aigbe said improved security could influence confidence in government leadership ahead of future elections.<\/p>\n

On the issue of kidnappings, Aigbe said ransom payments have become a significant source of funding for criminal networks, describing the trend as organised crime. Aigbe said stronger enforcement and targeted action will be required to disrupt these networks.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Aigbe said continued collaboration and sustained political commitment will be necessary to weaken insurgent groups and improve security across Nigeria.<\/p>\n
