{"id":35186,"date":"2026-05-22T20:41:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=35186"},"modified":"2026-05-22T20:41:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:41:23","slug":"who-raises-risk-of-ebola-outbreak-in-drc-to-very-high-at-national-level","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/who-raises-risk-of-ebola-outbreak-in-drc-to-very-high-at-national-level\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO raises risk of Ebola outbreak in DRC to &#8216;very high&#8217; at national level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO)\u00a0 has raised the risk of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola turning into a national outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to &#8220;very high&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment, was declared an emergency \u200bof international concern by the WHO on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now revising our risk assessment to \u200bvery high at the national level, high at the regional level, and low at \u2060global level,&#8221; WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>So far, 82 cases have been confirmed in the DRC, \u200bwith seven confirmed deaths, 177 suspected deaths and almost 750 suspected cases.
