{"id":35259,"date":"2026-05-24T08:24:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T06:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=35259"},"modified":"2026-05-24T08:24:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T06:24:22","slug":"sa-agency-urges-caution-after-escaped-lion-killed","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-agency-urges-caution-after-escaped-lion-killed\/","title":{"rendered":"SA agency urges caution after escaped lion killed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s (SA) Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has urged residents not to attempt to capture or confront wild animals that stray from protected areas after an escaped lion was killed by community members in Mpumalanga.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lion reportedly attacked a calf after leaving a protected area before it was tracked down and killed by residents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MTPA Spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube appealed to communities to immediately report sightings of dangerous wildlife to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said the agency has trained wildlife response teams capable of safely handling incidents involving lions and other potentially dangerous animals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shungube pointed out that lions pose a serious threat to public safety and should only be managed by qualified personnel.
