It marks the third consecutive review meeting to end without a joint outcome.

Do Hung Viet, who presided over the conference, said discussions were marked by engagement among member states but acknowledged that agreement could not be reached. Viet said the absence of consensus represents a missed opportunity to advance measures aimed at strengthening the treaty.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which came into force in 1970, is widely regarded as a central framework for preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting disarmament. However, no review conference has produced a substantive agreement on its commitments in the past 16 years.

Viet said the current global environment is characterised by heightened geopolitical tensions and increased risks associated with nuclear weapons. Viet said the lack of agreement raises concerns about the future effectiveness of the treaty.

Izumi Nakamitsu, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, said the ongoing failure to reach a consensus highlights divisions among states on key issues. Nakamitsu said commitments to non-proliferation must be accompanied by progress on disarmament.

Nakamitsu said the responsibilities of nuclear-armed states remain central to the treaty, noting that assumptions about compliance cannot be sustained without corresponding action on reducing arsenals. Recent developments, including the modernisation of nuclear stockpiles and growth in the number of weapons, have added to concerns around a potential renewed arms race.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also expressed concern over the outcome of the conference. Guterres said the failure to reach an agreement comes at a time of significant global security challenges. Guterres called on countries to continue dialogue and diplomatic engagement to address tensions and reduce nuclear risks. Guterres said sustained negotiation remains necessary to prevent escalation and support long-term disarmament goals.

The next review conference of the treaty is scheduled for 2031, leaving a multi-year gap before further formal negotiations take place. In the interim, discussions are expected to continue through other diplomatic channels.

–UN/ChannelAfrica–

[78,26
post-35287","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-featured","news-type-general_news","entry
The latest review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty concluded without an agreement, prolonging a period of deadlock in efforts to strengthen global nuclear disarmament frameworks.

The latest review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty concluded without an agreement, prolonging a period of deadlock in efforts to strengthen global nuclear disarmament frameworks.
["GET
