{"id":35830,"date":"2026-05-29T20:16:55","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T18:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=35830"},"modified":"2026-05-29T20:49:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T18:49:38","slug":"ghana-lawmakers-approve-bill-criminalising-lgbtq-promotion","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ghana-lawmakers-approve-bill-criminalising-lgbtq-promotion\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana lawmakers approve bill criminalising LGBTQ &#8216;promotion&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana\u2019s parliament this Friday approved a new bill that criminalises the so-called promotion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) activity, part of a broader \u200ccrackdown on sexual minorities in West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, passed by a voice vote after the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee unanimously recommended its adoption, first Deputy Sspeaker Bernard Ahiafor said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bill was introduced last year shortly after President John Dramani Mahama took office. Lawmakers from Mahama&#8217;s political party, the National Democratic Congress, had been urged by religious leaders and other supporters of the bill to vote on it, and Mahama will now face pressure to sign it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers passed an earlier version \u200cof \u2060the bill in 2024, under Mahama&#8217;s predecessor, President Nana Akufo-Addo, but it faced legal challenges and Akufo-Addo never signed it into law.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bill approved this Friday maintains the existing penalty of \u2060up to three years in prison for same-sex sexual acts. It also bans &#8220;funding, sponsorship or promotion&#8221; of LGBTQ acts, with \u2060prison terms ranging from three to five years.
