He was appointed in 2018 following mass protests against the \u200blong-ruling Ethiopian People&#8217;s Revolutionary Democratic Front coalition and his newly formed Prosperity Party won 410 out of 484 seats in parliament in elections in \u200b2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prosperity Party candidates have campaigned on the government&#8217;s economic record, citing improved food security and economic growth in \u2060Africa&#8217;s second-most populous country that officials project will top 10% in 2026, one of the fastest rates on the continent.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Nearly half of Ethiopia&#8217;s \u200b135 million population is under 18.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But \u00a0Ahmed\u00a0faces insurgencies in the country&#8217;s two biggest regions linked to \u200bgrievances by different ethnic groups about alleged marginalisation within Ethiopia&#8217;s federal system.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In his native Oromiya, a region in the south, fighting between government forces and the Oromo Liberation Army separatist group has killed hundreds of people in the past few years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In neighbouring Amhara, a militia known as Fano has seized swathes of the \u200bcountryside since 2023.
