{"id":36137,"date":"2026-06-03T11:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T09:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36137"},"modified":"2026-06-03T11:56:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T09:56:39","slug":"swimming-sa-submits-21-member-squad-for-commonwealth-games","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/swimming-sa-submits-21-member-squad-for-commonwealth-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimming SA submits 21-member squad for commonwealth games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swimming South Africa (SSA) president Alan Fritz has confirmed to SABC Sport that the federation has submitted a squad of 21 swimmers for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August.<\/p>\n<p>The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is expected to announce the final national squad of 111 athletes June 24, and SSA has already completed its submission process.<\/p>\n<p>Fritz says he would have preferred to send a much larger swimming team to the Games, ideally around 30 athletes, to give more swimmers international exposure and assess their readiness at the highest level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would have loved to take about 30 swimmers because the Commonwealth Games are part of our preparations for 2028. The most important thing is 2028, then 2032 and 2036. The athletes we took to the African Championships, we need to see where those athletes are compared to the rest of the world.
