The approval followed a formal request from the Government of Mozambique for emergency support from the AfDB to speed up recovery operations and deliver life-saving assistance to affected communities.<\/p>\n

The grant will be financed through the Bank\u2019s Special Relief Fund. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will implement the relief project, drawing on experience in displacement management and humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The project will provide 9 000 emergency shelters and essential household kits for about 45 000 people, with women and children expected to be among the main beneficiaries. The intervention will also include transport, installation, storage, site preparation, hygiene promotion and environmental cleaning.<\/p>\n

Minister of Finance Carla do Ros\u00e1rio Fernandes Loveira said the grant would help restore safety and dignity for thousands of affected households through the rapid delivery of temporary shelters and essential household items. Loveira said the partnership would strengthen the national emergency response, protect lives, stabilise communities and support recovery.<\/p>\n

IOM Chief of Mission in Mozambique, Dr Laura Tomm-Bonde, said lives and livelihoods had been severely disrupted across affected provinces, and needs remained extensive. Tomm-Bonde said the contribution had arrived at a critical moment for families displaced by the floods and would support rapid delivery of emergency shelter and household items.<\/p>\n

The IOM has already reached 2 510 households, or about 12 550 people, in Gaza and Maputo provinces under the emergency flood response project. A distribution on May 19 and May 20 assisted 495 households at the Filipe Samuel Magaia Resettlement Centre in Boane District, Maputo Province. Earlier support between March 31 and April 11 reached 2 015 households in the Xilembene community in Ch\u00f3kw\u00e8 District, Gaza Province.<\/p>\n

Assistance included tarpaulins, blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets and solar lamps, along with awareness sessions on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Building Back Safer.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Mabalane and Manjacaze districts have been identified as the next priority locations. The intervention also builds on drone-assisted assessment work under the Drone-Based Disaster Management Project supported through the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Trust Fund.<\/p>\n
