{"id":36205,"date":"2026-06-04T08:09:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T06:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36205"},"modified":"2026-06-04T08:09:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T06:09:38","slug":"sas-adcock-ingram-accused-of-excessive-pricing-for-kidney-medication","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sas-adcock-ingram-accused-of-excessive-pricing-for-kidney-medication\/","title":{"rendered":"SA\u2019s Adcock Ingram accused of excessive pricing for kidney medication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pharmaceutical manufacturer Adcock Ingram Critical Care (AICC) in South Africa (SA) is facing allegations of anti-competitive conduct over the pricing of its kidney failure treatment products.<\/p>\n<p>The Competition Commission has referred the case to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>The commission says that between July 2019 and June 2024, Adcock Ingram engaged in excessive pricing for products used in dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy.<\/p>\n<p>SA faces a growing demand for dialysis driven by high rates of diabetes, hypertension, and human immunodeficiency virus.<\/p>\n<p>Competition Commission Spokesperson, Siyabulela Makunga, says the inflated prices directly hurt the broader healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExpensive renal replacement therapies can limit access to treatment and place financial pressure on government, renal facilities, medical schemes, and patients. The commission investigated the matter following a complaint filed with it and found that AICC is dominant in the market for renal replacement therapy products in SA.
