{"id":36287,"date":"2026-06-05T07:48:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T05:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36287"},"modified":"2026-06-05T07:48:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T05:48:24","slug":"sa-president-expected-to-launch-hiv-prevention-injection-rollout","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-president-expected-to-launch-hiv-prevention-injection-rollout\/","title":{"rendered":"SA President expected to launch HIV prevention injection rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to launch the rollout of lifesaving Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention medicine, at the Lillian Ngoyi Stadium in Mpumalanga province on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Lenacapavir is administered via injection twice a year, offering patients six months of continuous HIV protection per dose.<\/p>\n<p>SA is reported to have one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, with approximately eight million infected persons.<\/p>\n<p>The SA Presidency has hailed the treatment as a major breakthrough in the fight against HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Chairperson of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) Sibongile Tshabalala says, \u201cWe have a number of preventative tools starting from condoms, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PREP), and other preventative tools that are not talked about a lot. This one, we believe that it will do much because it has less administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, for instance, when you are getting it, you\u2019ll get it once every six months, which no one will know, unlike with PREP pills that people are having a stigma around.
