{"id":36312,"date":"2026-06-05T12:17:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T10:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36312"},"modified":"2026-06-05T12:17:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T10:17:07","slug":"sa-minister-welcomes-landmark-gas-agreement","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-minister-welcomes-landmark-gas-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Minister welcomes landmark gas agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">South Africa&#8217;s (SA) Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has hailed the signing of a gas supply agreement between Eskom and Zululand Energy Terminal as a major milestone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">It aims to unlock SA&#8217;s first large-scale liquefied natural gas import and gas-to-power infrastructure in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal Province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Ramokgopa says the historic moment is a step towards securing the country&#8217;s energy security and unlocking investment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;By 2030, in terms of the same Integrated Resource Plan, we anticipate decommissioning about eight gigawatts of coal-fired electricity generation in the country. And that ought to be replaced by a flexible, dispatchable energy source that is also capable of supporting system stability. And gas has been identified as that energy source. And it is important that we give life to that ambition.
