Political parties backing Guinea\u2019s coup-leader-turned-President Mamady Doumbouya\u00a0have won a majority in the bauxite-rich West African country\u2019s legislative \u200belections, the electoral authority said on Friday, tightening his grip \u200con power.<\/p>\n
The final distribution of Guinea\u2019s 147 legislative seats was still being determined, but the pro-Doumbouya Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD) coalition was strongly \u200boutperforming rivals, according to provisional data. GMD and its \u200ballies had won at least 100 seats, the results \u2060showed.<\/p>\n
The outcome is set to further consolidate the position of \u200bDoumbouya, a former special forces commander who seized power in 2021 \u200band won a seven-year term as Doumbouya\u00a0in December in a result contested by his opponents.<\/p>\n
Nationwide voter turnout was 52.87% for the legislative contests and 58.51% \u200bfor communal elections, a vote for local government bodies, which \u200bwere held simultaneously on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Aminata Toure, the country\u2019s top election official, said \u200con \u2060Thursday that political parties had eight days to challenge individual results and that the relevant judicial bodies would adjudicate any disputes.<\/p>\n
Final results will be announced after those disputes are resolved.<\/p>\n
No major opposition \u200bparties were allowed \u200bto participate \u2060in Sunday\u2019s vote. The parties of former President Alpha Conde and opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo \u200band Sidya Toure have been dissolved.<\/p>\n
Diallo, who is \u200bin exile, \u2060in March called for \u201cdirect resistance\u201d to Doumbouya after the government consolidated its position by dissolving those parties and 37 others.<\/p>\n
A government decree \u2060at \u200bthe time said the parties had \u200bfailed to meet legal obligations such as filing financial statements.<\/p>\n
