{"id":36482,"date":"2026-06-08T11:58:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T09:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36482"},"modified":"2026-06-08T12:26:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T10:26:31","slug":"foreign-owned-spaza-shops-fuel-township-economy-concerns-sa-president","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/foreign-owned-spaza-shops-fuel-township-economy-concerns-sa-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign-owned spaza shops fuel township economy concerns: SA President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says he has taken note of concerns from South Africans who argue that the township economy has been hijacked by foreign nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the nation from the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng province, Ramaphosa acknowledged that migrants have, in some instances, contributed to the exclusion of local residents from operating informal businesses such as spaza shops.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said it is an undeniable reality that some SA have been sidelined from participating in small businesses within their own communities.<\/p>\n<p>He has called on government departments to strengthen support for and promote local businesses, in order to ensure that citizens also benefit from the growing township economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany communities have expressed anger about the number of foreign nationals running spaza shops, trading stores, and other informal outlets. They argue that foreign enterprises are squeezing SA from operating in these markets in their own communities. These concerns cannot and must not be dismissed. Many SA feel excluded.
