Mauritius said this Monday that \u200bit had not received any proposal from the Trump administration on \u200cthe Chagos Islands, after the Telegraph reported that the White House was considering a plan to buy the islands from Mauritius.<\/p>\n
“The Mauritian government has \u200btaken note of the information reported by the Telegraph. \u200bAs at today, it has not received any official \u2060proposal and has not been approached, either directly or \u200bindirectly, by the US administration regarding a separate agreement concerning \u200bDiego Garcia or the Chagos Archipelago,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“Mauritius’s position remains unchanged: its sovereignty over the Chagos (Archipelago) is non-negotiable.”<\/p>\n
The Telegraph reported \u200bon Sunday that the plan was among several options being \u200bdrafted by the White House, in a paper aimed at providing alternatives \u200cto \u2060British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ceding sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius.<\/p>\n
Britain’s government in April put on hold its deal to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, home to \u200bthe United States (US)-British \u200bDiego Garcia air \u2060base, which had been criticized by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Trump said in February the agreement \u200bwas a “big mistake.”<\/p>\n
Britain forcibly displaced up to \u200b2 000 indigenous \u2060Chagossians in the late 1960s and 1970s to establish the base on the Diego Garcia atoll, but had last year \u2060agreed to \u200bgive sovereignty to former colony Mauritius \u200bwhile paying 101 million Pounds ($135 million) per year to secure the installation.<\/p>\n
