{"id":36570,"date":"2026-06-09T10:37:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T08:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36570"},"modified":"2026-06-09T10:37:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T08:37:00","slug":"kenyan-police-fire-tear-gas-during-protest-against-us-ebola-quarantine-facility","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/kenyan-police-fire-tear-gas-during-protest-against-us-ebola-quarantine-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenyan police fire tear gas during protest against US Ebola quarantine facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Kenyan police fired \u200btear gas on Tuesday to scatter protesters in the central town of \u200cNanyuki opposing a quarantine centre, for Americans exposed to Ebola that the United States (US) government has raced to build despite Kenyan court orders barring further work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">The proposed 50 bed unit on an air force base has angered \u200bmany Kenyans, who accuse the US of offloading the health risk of \u200bcaring for those exposed to the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic \u2060of Congo and Uganda.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Two people were killed in protests last week in Nanyuki, where frustration \u200bhas grown among residents as Kenyan and US authorities publicly reaffirm their commitment to the \u200bplan in spite of the court orders.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Police fired tear gas to disperse small groups of protesters who had gathered early on Tuesday.
