Speaking at the opening of the UN June Climate Meetings in Bonn, Germany, Stiell said progress is being made but remains insufficient given the scale and urgency of the global climate crisis. The mid-year negotiations are seen as a key step ahead of the COP31 climate conference scheduled for November in Antalya, T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n

Stiell said climate action is no longer optional, stressing that all economies and populations depend on addressing the crisis effectively. He urged countries to focus on delivering what has already been agreed under the Paris Agreement rather than revisiting past negotiations.<\/p>\n

The Bonn meetings, which run over two weeks, bring together delegates to advance both technical and political discussions. Key areas of focus include climate adaptation, financing, the transition to renewable energy, and strengthening food systems. The talks will also follow up on the first global stocktake, which assessed progress toward limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Stiell said that while momentum is building, current efforts are still falling short. He noted that climate action is beginning to shift economies, but warned that progress must increase in both speed and scale to meet global targets.<\/p>\n

A major concern highlighted by Stiell is the continued dependence on fossil fuels. He said this reliance is contributing to inflation, economic instability and exposure to global shocks, including recent disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions. Stiell said fossil fuel dependence weakens energy security and leaves countries vulnerable to climate-related disasters.<\/p>\n

Stiell urged governments to move more quickly to implement their climate plans, including advancing work on adaptation goals, climate finance and mechanisms to support a just transition. He also called for stronger links between climate policy and the real economy, encouraging collaboration between governments, businesses, investors and civil society.<\/p>\n

Stiell acknowledged concerns about the complexity of the climate process and said efforts are underway to make it more efficient and accessible. However, he emphasised that responsibility ultimately lies with countries to take decisive action.<\/p>\n

As the Bonn meetings proceed, Stiell called on delegates to use the opportunity to tackle urgent challenges such as energy and food security, urban resilience and methane emissions. He said the coming months will be critical in determining whether countries can translate commitments into meaningful outcomes ahead of COP31.<\/p>\n
